Why handmade toys are great for kids
Most kids these days are absolutely spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing a toy to play with, but when it comes to choosing quality, safe and ethical toys for your children, here at Little Hathi we believe that handmade toys are by far the best!
There have been many worrying headlines in the news recently about the dangers of plastic in toys. The most common concerns are the toxic chemicals that are contained within the plastic, like BPA (bisphenol A). Studies have shown that this could be linked to heart disease and diabetes. Another worry is phthalates, which are used to soften plastic and make it more pliable. This group of chemicals were considered so dangerous that many are restricted in the use of toys in the EU. Certain phthalates are linked to cancer, eczema, allergies and kidney damage.

And, if you need any more reasons to spoil your kids with fabulous handmade toys then they are usually more environmentally friendly because they are not mass-produced and have travelled far fewer “toy miles”. They often support charitable initatives and encourage independent and local cottage industries.
Ok, so some handmade toys may be slightly pricier than their mass-produced imported pals from the far-east, but, they are much more likely to last longer and are often so well crafted that they can be passed between siblings and even kept for future generations.
